Water Quality

Published 26 September 2026 • By Aqua Prima, Ichhra, Lahore

Key finding: Bore water in most Lahore residential areas — Ichhra, Samanabad, Rehmanpura, Shama, Muslim Town — has TDS of 700–2000+ ppm. Pakistan drinking water standard allows 1000 ppm max; WHO recommends below 600 ppm. Most Lahore bore water fails both benchmarks without treatment.

Why Lahore Bore Water TDS Is So High

Lahore sits on an alluvial plain where groundwater moves through mineral-rich geological formations. The combination of high mineral dissolution rates, shallow bore well depth in many urban areas, and centuries of agricultural and industrial activity has resulted in bore water that is significantly more mineralised than national averages suggest.

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) measures the total concentration of dissolved minerals — primarily calcium, magnesium, sodium, chlorides and sulphates. At high levels, these dissolved minerals affect taste, cause scaling in pipes and appliances, and at very high levels may have health implications. They are not visible to the eye and cannot be detected by taste alone until levels are extreme.

Lahore Bore Water TDS by Area — Original Field Data

The data below is based on Aqua Prima's direct source-water analysis across Lahore bore wells. Individual wells can vary significantly by depth, bore age and proximity to contamination sources. These are typical observed ranges, not guarantees for any specific bore well.

Lahore Area Typical TDS (ppm) Typical Hardness (mg/L CaCO3) Safe to Drink Untreated? RO Needed?
Ichhra 900–1800 400–800 (very high) No Yes + softener
Shama Chowk & surrounds 800–1600 350–700 (high–very high) No Yes + softener
Baba Azam Chowk / Ferozepur Rd 800–1700 350–650 (high) No Yes
Samanabad 700–1600 300–600 (high) No Yes + softener
Rehmanpura 800–1700 400–750 (very high) No Yes + softener
Muslim Town 600–1400 300–600 (high) No Yes (test first)
Garden Town 500–1200 250–500 (moderate–high) Borderline Usually yes
Gulberg 450–1000 200–450 (moderate–high) Borderline Usually yes
Model Town 450–1000 200–400 (moderate–high) Borderline Usually yes
WASA municipal supply 200–500 (variable) 150–350 (moderate) Often acceptable If TDS elevated

All values are typical observed ranges from Aqua Prima field analysis. A site-specific water test is essential before any system design.

What Does High TDS Mean for Your Health?

TDS itself is not a direct health risk at moderate levels. However, in Lahore bore water, high TDS is typically accompanied by high hardness (calcium and magnesium), which causes scaling and is associated with long-term cardiovascular effects in very high concentrations. More critically, Lahore bore water frequently shows microbiological contamination — which IS a direct and immediate health risk — and may carry arsenic, iron or nitrates at levels of concern.

The WHO guideline of “below 600 ppm” for drinking water TDS is a palatability and general-health guideline, not a strict threshold. However, most Lahore bore water sits well above this level, and the associated hardness and microbiological parameters make treatment essential rather than optional.

Does TDS Tell You Everything You Need to Know?

No. TDS is the total concentration of dissolved solids, but it does not tell you what those dissolved solids are. A TDS meter is a useful monitoring tool for your RO output but is not a substitute for a full water test before installation. The parameters that most directly affect RO system design — hardness, iron, arsenic, microbiological content and pH — are invisible to a TDS meter.

🔧 Aqua Prima Tip

Aqua Prima tests TDS, hardness, iron, pH, turbidity and microbiological parameters before recommending any RO system. A TDS meter reading is a useful starting point but never the basis for a system design in Lahore bore water conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TDS of bore water in Lahore?

Lahore bore water TDS varies by area. Ichhra: 900–1800 ppm. Samanabad: 700–1600 ppm. Rehmanpura: 800–1700 ppm. Shama Chowk: 800–1600 ppm. Muslim Town: 600–1400 ppm. Garden Town: 500–1200 ppm. WASA supply: 200–500 ppm (variable).

What TDS level is safe to drink in Pakistan?

Pakistan drinking water standard allows up to 1000 mg/L TDS. WHO guidelines suggest below 600 mg/L is acceptable and below 300 mg/L is considered good quality. Most Lahore bore water in residential areas significantly exceeds both benchmarks without treatment.

Is Lahore bore water safe to drink without treatment?

No. Most Lahore bore water has TDS above 600 ppm, very high hardness and frequently shows microbiological contamination. Without RO treatment plus UV disinfection, Lahore bore water does not meet WHO or Pakistan drinking water standards in most residential localities.

How much does it cost to test bore water TDS in Lahore?

A basic water test covering TDS, hardness, pH, turbidity and coliform bacteria costs approximately PKR 2,000–6,000 in Lahore. Aqua Prima can arrange source-water sampling and testing as part of the RO consultation process.
