How to Choose the Right RO Plant in Pakistan
A 6-step practical guide: water testing, demand calculation with recovery rate, capacity selection, pretreatment specification, supplier evaluation and 8 red flags to avoid. With Lahore bore water specific guidance.
6-Step Framework
How to Choose the Right RO Plant — Step by Step
Test Your Source Water First
Test TDS, hardness, pH, turbidity and iron at minimum. The results determine: whether RO is needed at all, what pretreatment is required, which membrane specification is appropriate and what capacity will deliver your required output. A water test costs PKR 2,000–6,000. Skipping it is the most expensive mistake you can make.
Calculate Your Daily Water Demand Accurately
Family home: typically 50–200 litres/day for drinking and cooking. Office: 3–5 litres per person per day. Restaurant: assess cooking and drinking volumes separately. Water shop: calculate from planned 18.9L bottle filling volume per day. Do not guess — undersized systems run at maximum capacity continuously and degrade faster.
Account for Recovery Rate in Capacity Calculation
A system at 70% recovery needs 143 litres of feed water to produce 100 litres of permeate. On Lahore high-TDS bore water (1200 ppm), recovery may be 65%, meaning 154 litres of feed for 100 litres of permeate. Required LPH = (daily demand ÷ operational hours) ÷ recovery rate. Most Pakistani suppliers do not explain this. It is why a 500 LPH system on Lahore bore water does not actually produce 500 litres of usable water per hour of feed water consumed.
Specify the Pretreatment Based on Your Water Test
Hard water (Lahore bore water is almost always hard, typically 400–800 mg/L) needs a softener. Iron-rich water needs iron removal. High sediment needs multimedia filtration. Chlorinated supply needs carbon filtration. Pretreatment must be in the quotation — not an optional add-on discussed after you have committed.
Evaluate the Supplier Honestly
Ask: Does the supplier test your water before recommending a system? Do they provide a written itemised quotation specifying every component? Do they offer after-sales maintenance and replacement parts? Are they reachable after installation? The cheapest installation often becomes the most expensive system in year 2 when the supplier is unreachable and the membrane fails early.
Compare Total 5-Year Cost, Not Just Purchase Price
A system that costs PKR 200,000 more at installation but saves PKR 150,000 in premature membrane replacements and includes 3 years of maintenance support is the cheaper system over 5 years. Aqua Prima includes estimated annual operating cost in every quotation so the comparison is fair. See the full operating cost guide.
Capacity Selection
Which LPH Capacity Is Right for Your Application?
| Daily Demand | Required Capacity | Recovery Adjustment | Typical Application | Approx. Price (PKR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 200 L/day | Domestic (50–100 LPH) | Apply recovery factor | Family home | 28,000 – 150,000 |
| 5,000–10,000 L/day | 500 LPH | At 65%: ~7,700 L/day feed needed | Restaurant, water shop, school | 450,000 – 850,000 |
| 10,000–20,000 L/day | 1000 LPH | At 65%: ~15,400 L/day feed needed | Hotel, hospital, medium factory | 850,000 – 1,600,000 |
| 20,000–40,000 L/day | 2000 LPH | At 65%: ~30,800 L/day feed needed | Large commercial, water business | 1,700,000 – 3,500,000 |
| 40,000+ L/day | Custom | Full engineering design required | Industrial, community systems | On request |
8 Red Flags
Warning Signs in an RO Plant Quotation
| Red Flag | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| No water test requested before quoting | System designed for imaginary water quality | Request water test as condition; walk away if refused |
| Single lump-sum price, no itemisation | Component substitution possible after commitment | Request full itemised quotation with every component |
| Membrane brand and element count not stated | Lower-grade or fewer elements may be used | Insist on membrane brand, specification and count in writing |
| Pretreatment not mentioned or listed as optional | Supplier expects membrane to fail early | Pretreatment must be specified based on water test results |
| “One time investment, lifetime earning” claims | No RO system is maintenance-free; this is false | Ask for written maintenance schedule and annual running cost estimate |
| Price significantly below comparable quotes | Missing components or no after-sales support | Ask what is in the lower quote vs comparable; verify itemisation |
| No after-sales service offered | You will be on your own when problems arise | Confirm maintenance availability, parts supply and service contact |
| Cannot explain permeate TDS or recovery rate | Supplier does not understand the system they are selling | A competent supplier states expected permeate TDS from your feed water TDS |
