Water Testing Before RO Installation — What to Test, Why & What Results Mean

The single most important step before any RO plant purchase. Which parameters to test, what Lahore bore water typically shows by locality, how to interpret results, and how test data drives system design. With original Aqua Prima field data.

⚠ Why this matters: An RO system recommended without a water test is designed for imaginary water. The correct membrane count, pump size, softener requirement, iron removal need and UV decision all depend on what is actually in your source water. A water test costs PKR 2,000–6,000. An incorrectly specified system costs PKR 50,000–500,000 in wasted installation and premature membrane replacement.

Water Parameters to Test Before RO Installation

Parameter Why It Matters for RO Design Pakistan Limit Action if Elevated
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) Determines membrane element count, pump pressure and expected recovery rate Below 1000 mg/L Above 500 ppm: RO required. Above 1000 ppm: more membrane elements + stronger pump
Hardness (as CaCO3) Hard water scales the RO membrane — primary cause of early failure in Pakistan Below 500 mg/L (varies) Above 300 mg/L: softener or antiscalant required. Lahore bore water typically 400–800 mg/L
pH Affects membrane performance and corrosion of system components 6.5–8.5 Outside range: pH correction required before membrane
Turbidity (NTU) Turbid water clogs prefilters rapidly Below 5 NTU (treated) Above 5 NTU: multimedia filtration + sediment cartridge required
Iron (Fe total) Iron deposits irreversibly on membrane surface causing fouling Below 0.3 mg/L Above 0.3 mg/L: iron removal filtration required before carbon and RO
Chlorine (residual) Chlorine permanently oxidises polyamide RO membranes Below 0.2 mg/L at membrane Any detectable chlorine: carbon prefilter essential
Arsenic (As) Above 10 ppb is a drinking-water health concern; present in some Punjab bore water Below 10 ppb (WHO) Elevated: RO removes 85–95%; confirm removal with post-RO test
Coliform bacteria Indicates microbiological contamination of source water Zero CFU/100mL Any detection: UV post-treatment essential
Nitrates (NO3) Health concern especially for infants; elevated in agricultural areas Below 50 mg/L (WHO) RO removes 60–90%; confirm removal rate is adequate
Fluoride Above 1.5 mg/L is a health concern; elevated in some Punjab bore water Below 1.5 mg/L RO removes 85–95%; verify post-RO concentration meets limits

Bore Water Quality Across Lahore Localities — Original Aqua Prima Field Data

This is original Aqua Prima data from source-water analyses conducted across Lahore bore wells. No other Pakistani RO supplier publishes locality-specific water quality data with this level of detail. Aqua Prima is based in Ichhra, Lahore — near Shama Chowk, Baba Azam Chowk, Hamza Hospital, FMH College and the Ferozepur Road commercial corridor.

Lahore Locality Typical TDS (ppm) Typical Hardness (mg/L CaCO3) Key Concerns System Design Implication
Ichhra (Aqua Prima base) 900–1800 400–800 (very high) High TDS, very high hardness, microbiological Multimedia + softener + antiscalant + carbon + RO + UV. Softener essential.
Shama Chowk & surrounds 800–1600 350–700 (high to very high) High TDS, high hardness Softener + full prefiltration + RO + UV
Baba Azam Chowk / Ferozepur Rd 800–1700 350–650 (high) High TDS, hardness Softener or antiscalant + prefiltration + RO + UV
Samanabad 700–1600 300–600 (high) High TDS, occasional iron Softener recommended + prefiltration + RO + UV
Rehmanpura 800–1700 400–750 (very high) Very high hardness Softener essential + prefiltration + RO + UV
Muslim Town 600–1400 300–600 (high) Variable by depth Test first; softener likely needed; RO + UV
Garden Town 500–1200 250–500 (moderate to high) Varies significantly by plot Test first; pretreatment based on results
Gulberg 450–1000 200–450 (moderate to high) Variable; some plots do not need softener Test first; often simpler pretreatment
Model Town 450–1000 200–400 (moderate to high) Varies significantly by bore depth Test first; varies by location
WASA municipal supply 200–500 (variable) 150–350 (moderate) Chlorine; monsoon turbidity spikes Carbon prefiltration essential; softener if hardness elevated; RO if TDS elevated

All ranges are typical observed values from analyses conducted by Aqua Prima. Actual values vary by bore depth, well age and season. A site-specific water test is always required before system design.

How Your Water Test Results Drive RO System Specification

📌 High TDS Result

More membrane elements needed. Larger high-pressure pump required. Lower recovery rate at same pressure. Higher electricity consumption. All directly affect system price.

📌 High Hardness Result

Water softener or antiscalant dosing system specified. Without this, membrane scales and fails in 12–18 months instead of 3–4 years. Adds PKR 80,000–200,000 to commercial system cost.

📌 Iron Detected

Iron removal filtration stage specified before carbon and RO. Even moderate iron at 0.5–1.0 mg/L causes significant membrane fouling if it reaches the RO stage.

📌 Coliform Detected

UV post-treatment after the RO membrane becomes essential, not optional. Confirms microbiological risk in source water that RO alone should not be relied upon to address without UV backup.

FAQs — Water Testing Before RO Installation

Where can I get water tested in Lahore?
Water testing is available through PCRWR (Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources), PCSIR, WAPDA analytical laboratories and private testing laboratories in Lahore. Aqua Prima can arrange source-water sampling and laboratory testing as part of the RO consultation process. A basic test covering TDS, hardness, pH, turbidity and coliform costs approximately PKR 2,000–6,000.
How much does a water test cost in Pakistan?
A basic water test (TDS, hardness, pH, turbidity and coliform) costs approximately PKR 2,000–6,000. Extended testing including arsenic, heavy metals, nitrates, fluoride and full microbiological parameters costs PKR 5,000–15,000+. This is negligible compared to an RO system — and compared to the cost of a system incorrectly designed without test data.
Can I use a TDS meter instead of a full water test?
A TDS meter tells you total dissolved solids concentration but nothing about what those dissolved solids are. It does not indicate hardness, iron content, arsenic, microbiological contamination or pH — all critical for RO system design. Use a TDS meter for ongoing monitoring of your RO output; use a full water test for pre-installation system design.
What is the typical bore water TDS in Ichhra, Lahore?
Bore water in Ichhra typically has TDS of 900–1800 ppm and very high hardness of 400–800 mg/L as CaCO3. These characteristics require a correctly sized RO system with softener pretreatment, full prefiltration and UV post-treatment for drinking water. A site-specific test for your individual bore well is still essential as values vary by depth and location.
What if I have already installed an RO system without a water test?
A water test now can explain shorter-than-expected membrane life, identify missing pretreatment, or confirm the system is performing correctly for your actual source water. Aqua Prima can assess your current system alongside a fresh source-water test and recommend any corrections needed — such as adding a softener if membrane scaling has been occurring.
What is the TDS of WASA water in Lahore?
WASA municipal supply in Lahore typically has TDS of 200–500 ppm, significantly lower than bore water. However, TDS varies seasonally and by area. Carbon prefiltration is essential for WASA supply due to chlorine. If TDS is elevated or microbiological contamination is a concern during monsoon, RO or UV treatment may still be appropriate.
