Water Treatment

Published 5 October 2026 • Aqua Prima, Ichhra, Lahore

One-line summary: A regular filter removes particles and chlorine taste but cannot reduce TDS. UV disinfects microbiologically but cannot reduce TDS. RO reduces TDS by 95–99% and provides microbial exclusion. For Lahore bore water with TDS 700–2000 ppm, RO + UV is the standard solution — the other two technologies alone do not solve the problem.

What Each Technology Does — Honest Side-by-Side

Technology Removes Sediment/Particles Reduces TDS Removes Hardness Kills Bacteria Kills Viruses Suitable for Lahore Bore Water?
Sediment filter Yes No No No No Insufficient alone — TDS remains unchanged
Carbon filter Yes + chlorine/taste No No No No Insufficient alone — TDS remains unchanged
Ceramic filter Yes + some bacteria No No Partially No Insufficient alone — TDS remains unchanged
UF (Ultrafiltration) Yes + bacteria No No Yes (99%+) Partially No — does not address TDS
UV Disinfection No No No Yes (99%+) Yes (99%+) No alone — TDS completely unchanged by UV
RO (Reverse Osmosis) Via pretreatment Yes (95–99%) Yes Yes (99%+) Yes (99%+) Yes — primary solution for Lahore bore water
RO + UV (Recommended) Via pretreatment Yes (95–99%) Yes Yes (double layer) Yes (double layer) Yes — standard for drinking water businesses

Why Regular Filters Are Not Enough for Lahore Bore Water

A conventional water filter — sediment, carbon, ceramic or multimedia — removes particles and some chemicals. It does not remove dissolved salts. If your Lahore bore water has TDS of 1,200 ppm, a conventional filtration system delivers clean-looking, clean-tasting (at moderate levels) but dissolved-mineral-rich water at 1,200 ppm TDS — unchanged.

Pakistan’s drinking water standard allows 1000 ppm. WHO recommends below 600 ppm. A conventional filter on 1,200 ppm Lahore bore water produces water above both benchmarks. TDS cannot be reduced by filtration; it requires RO.

Why UV Alone Is Not Enough for Lahore Bore Water

UV disinfection kills bacteria and viruses by exposing water to ultraviolet light, damaging the DNA of microorganisms. It is highly effective at microbiological disinfection. But UV has absolutely no effect on TDS, hardness, arsenic, nitrates or any dissolved chemical. Water with 1,500 ppm TDS that has been UV-treated is disinfected but chemically identical to what entered the UV chamber.

For Lahore bore water, UV alone delivers disinfected but high-TDS water — not suitable for drinking. UV is used as a post-treatment stage after RO, adding a second layer of microbiological assurance after the RO membrane has already excluded 99%+ of microorganisms physically.

Cost Comparison: All Three Technologies Over 3 Years

Technology Capital Cost (PKR) Annual Running Cost (PKR) 3-Year Total (PKR) Solves Lahore Bore Water TDS?
Sediment + carbon filter (quality) 5,000–25,000 2,000–6,000 11,000–43,000 No
UV standalone unit 8,000–30,000 2,000–8,000 14,000–54,000 No
Domestic RO (home system) 28,000–120,000 6,000–20,000 46,000–180,000 Yes
Domestic RO + UV 35,000–145,000 8,000–25,000 59,000–220,000 Yes + microbiological double layer
500 LPH commercial RO + UV 700,000–870,000 92,000–245,000 976,000–1,605,000 Yes

When Each Technology Is Actually Appropriate

Regular filter only: Source water TDS already below 300 ppm (WASA supply in some areas), and the only concern is sediment, chlorine taste or turbidity. Test first.

UV only: Source water TDS is acceptable (below 300–400 ppm), dissolved parameters are within limits, and microbiological contamination is the only concern. Water must be pre-clarified for UV to work effectively (particles shield microorganisms from UV light).

RO only: High TDS bore water in a non-drinking application (industrial process, boiler feed, cleaning) where microbiological risk is not a concern.

RO + UV (most Lahore residential and commercial applications): High TDS bore water with microbiological risk — which describes almost every residential bore well in Ichhra, Samanabad, Rehmanpura, Shama and surrounding areas.

🔧 Aqua Prima: Aqua Prima tests your water before recommending any technology. A water test confirms whether your specific bore well needs RO, UV, both, or whether simpler filtration is actually sufficient. Do not spend PKR 150,000 on an RO plant for water that a PKR 15,000 carbon filter would adequately treat — and do not spend PKR 15,000 on a filter for water that needs RO.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an RO plant better than a regular water filter in Pakistan?

For Lahore bore water with TDS of 700–2000 ppm, yes. A regular filter cannot reduce TDS; RO reduces it by 95–99%. A filter is appropriate only when TDS is already acceptable and the concern is only sediment, turbidity or chlorine taste.

Can UV replace an RO plant in Lahore?

No. UV has zero effect on TDS, hardness, arsenic or any dissolved chemical. Lahore bore water with 1,000–2,000 ppm TDS that has been UV-treated is disinfected but chemically unchanged — still far above acceptable drinking water TDS levels.

Do I need both RO and UV in Lahore?

For drinking water applications on Lahore bore water, yes. RO provides 95–99% TDS reduction and 99%+ microbiological exclusion. UV adds a second disinfection layer. The combination is the standard recommendation for homes, offices and water businesses in Lahore.

What is UF (Ultrafiltration) and is it better than RO?

UF removes particles, bacteria and some viruses by size exclusion but does not reduce TDS, hardness or dissolved metals. For Lahore bore water with high TDS, UF is insufficient. RO addresses both dissolved solids and microbiological quality in a single system.
