Water Quality

Published 5 October 2026 • Aqua Prima, Ichhra, Lahore

Plain language summary: A water test report tells you what is in your bore water and whether it needs treatment. This guide translates the technical parameters — TDS, hardness, pH, iron, arsenic, coliform — into plain language so you know exactly what your specific bore well requires before any RO purchase decision.

Why Your Water Test Report Matters More Than Any Salesman’s Recommendation

A water test report is the only objective basis for an RO system recommendation. It contains the specific characteristics of your bore well — not area averages, not what the supplier expects, not what worked on the neighbouring plot. Your bore well has its own TDS, hardness, pH, iron and microbiological profile based on its depth, age, geology and local environment.

A supplier who gives you an RO recommendation without a water test is guessing. The right pretreatment, membrane count, pump specification and post-treatment all depend on what the test shows. This guide helps you read the report yourself so you can verify that the recommended system matches your actual water.

Parameter by Parameter: What Each Reading Means

Parameter Your Result What It Means When to Worry Action Required
TDS (ppm or mg/L) Below 300 Good quality; RO may not be needed unless other parameters elevated Above 600 ppm Above 500 ppm: consider RO; above 1000 ppm: RO required
TDS (ppm or mg/L) 300–600 WHO acceptable; Pakistan limit is 1000 ppm Borderline Review other parameters; RO recommended if concern exists
TDS (ppm or mg/L) 600–1000 Above WHO guideline (600); within Pakistan limit (1000) Yes — treat RO strongly recommended
TDS (ppm or mg/L) Above 1000 Above Pakistan drinking water standard Immediate action RO required; system must be sized for this TDS level
Total Hardness (mg/L CaCO3) Below 150 Soft water; softener not required Not at this level No pretreatment needed for hardness
Total Hardness 150–300 Moderately hard; monitor Borderline Antiscalant dosing may be sufficient
Total Hardness 300–500 Hard; softener recommended Yes Water softener or antiscalant required
Total Hardness Above 500 Very hard (Lahore bore water typical) Urgent Water softener essential; without it membrane fails in 12–18 months
pH 6.5–8.5 Normal range; no action needed Outside this range pH outside 6.5–8.5 requires pH correction before membrane
pH Below 6.5 Acidic; can damage membrane over time Yes pH correction dosing or specific membrane selection required
pH Above 8.5 Alkaline; increases scaling risk Yes Review in context of hardness; may need pH adjustment
Turbidity (NTU) Below 1 Excellent clarity; standard prefiltration sufficient Not at this level Standard sediment prefilter
Turbidity 1–5 Acceptable; monitor Borderline Standard sediment + multimedia prefiltration
Turbidity Above 5 High turbidity; enhanced prefiltration required Yes Multimedia filtration + sediment cartridge; may need coagulation
Iron (Fe total, mg/L) Below 0.1 Low iron; no iron removal needed Not at this level Standard prefiltration
Iron 0.1–0.3 Borderline; monitor closely Borderline Sediment prefiltration should capture most; re-test after commissioning
Iron Above 0.3 Iron removal required before RO membrane Yes Iron removal filtration installed before carbon and RO; otherwise irreversible membrane fouling
Total Coliform (CFU/100mL) Zero No coliform detected; microbiologically acceptable Zero must be the result UV post-treatment still recommended for drinking water
Total Coliform Any positive result Microbiological contamination in source water Immediate UV post-treatment after RO membrane is essential; investigate source
E. coli (CFU/100mL) Zero No E. coli; acceptable Zero must be the result UV recommended; E. coli indicates faecal contamination if present
E. coli Any positive result Faecal contamination — serious health risk Immediate action UV essential; investigate bore well integrity
Arsenic (As, ppb or μg/L) Below 10 ppb Within WHO guideline Above 10 ppb RO removes 85–95% of arsenic; confirm post-RO level with test
Arsenic 10–50 ppb Above WHO guideline; health concern Yes RO required; confirm post-RO arsenic meets limits; elevated doses may need specialised treatment
Nitrates (NO3, mg/L) Below 50 mg/L Within WHO guideline Above 50 mg/L especially for infants RO removes 60–90%; confirm removal is adequate
Fluoride (F, mg/L) Below 1.5 mg/L Within WHO guideline Above 1.5 mg/L RO removes 85–95%; confirm post-RO fluoride level

The Most Important Numbers to Check First on Your Report

When you receive your water test report, check these five parameters in order:

  1. TDS — Is it above 500 ppm? If yes, RO is required. The exact number determines how many membrane elements and what pump size the system needs.
  2. Total Hardness — Is it above 300 mg/L? If yes, a water softener must be in the system design. This is the most commonly omitted component in Lahore RO quotations.
  3. Total Coliform / E. coli — Is there any positive detection? If yes, UV post-treatment is essential, not optional. Any detectable coliform in the source water means microbiological disinfection must be confirmed.
  4. Iron — Is it above 0.3 mg/L? If yes, iron removal filtration must be added before the membrane. Iron at this level causes irreversible membrane fouling within months.
  5. Arsenic — Is it above 10 ppb? This is a health concern. RO removes 85–95%; confirm with a post-installation permeate test that the level after RO meets safe limits.

What If Your Test Report Shows Multiple Elevated Parameters?

Multiple elevated parameters are common in Lahore bore water. A typical Ichhra or Rehmanpura bore well test might show TDS 1,400 ppm, hardness 650 mg/L, turbidity 3 NTU, iron 0.4 mg/L and positive coliform. This does not mean the water is unusable — it means a correctly designed system addresses all of them: multimedia filtration (turbidity + sediment), iron removal filtration, water softener (hardness), activated carbon (organics + any chlorine), RO membrane (TDS), UV post-treatment (microbiological).

Each parameter in the report has a corresponding pretreatment stage. A correctly designed system addresses all elevated parameters. That is why the water test must happen before the system is specified — not after.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TDS in a water test report?

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) is the total concentration of dissolved minerals in your water, measured in ppm or mg/L. In a water test report, TDS above 500 ppm means RO is recommended; above 1000 ppm means RO is required. Pakistan drinking water standard allows 1000 ppm maximum; WHO recommends below 600 ppm.

What does high hardness in a water test report mean for an RO plant?

Total hardness above 300 mg/L as CaCO3 means a water softener is required in your RO system pretreatment. Lahore bore water typically shows 400–800 mg/L. Without a softener at these levels, calcium carbonate scales the RO membrane and causes failure in 8–18 months instead of 2–4 years.

What does coliform in a water test report mean?

Any positive coliform detection in your source water indicates microbiological contamination. For drinking water applications, UV post-treatment after the RO membrane is essential when coliform is detected. This is common in Lahore urban bore water due to proximity of bore wells to contamination sources.

How do I get my bore water tested in Lahore?

Water testing in Lahore is available through PCRWR, PCSIR and private accredited laboratories. A basic test covering TDS, hardness, pH, turbidity, iron and coliform costs approximately PKR 2,000–6,000. Aqua Prima can coordinate sampling and testing as part of the RO consultation process.

My water test report shows high arsenic. Can an RO plant fix it?

Yes. RO membranes reject arsenic at 85–95% efficiency. If your source water shows arsenic above 10 ppb (the WHO guideline), an RO system is the appropriate treatment. After installation, a post-commissioning test of the permeate confirms that arsenic in the treated water is below safe limits.
